An Unofficial List of the Most Dramatic Celebrity Divorces of 2016
We are barely halfway through the year, but 2016 has brought with it another slew of dramatic celebrity divorces. Some of them have been resolved more amicably than others, but they each provide an interesting perspective on the legal process by which spouses move on from divorce and part ways financially. Below we take a look at four of the most dramatic celebrity divorces of 2016.
Johnny Depp and Amber Heard
Actress Amber Heard shocked the world in May 2016 when she showed up in court with bruises on her face, asking for a temporary restraining order against Johnny Depp, one of the biggest movie stars in the world, who she accused of domestic violence. Heard and Depp had already been in the process of getting a divorce when she made her request, which the judge granted. The judge was to set conduct hearings into whether to convert the temporary restraining order into a permanent restraining order in August, and Heard had even participated in a deposition related to the hearing, when Heard and Depp announced they had reached a settlement in their divorce. In that settlement, Depp will pay $7 million to Heard, and Heard has pledged to donate the entire $7 million to charity to combat domestic abuse.
Kaley Cuoco and Ryan Sweeting
Kaley Cuoco has one of the most lucrative deals in television, having signed a $72 million contract to star in the Big Bang Theory, but she will not be required to split the proceeds of the contract with her ex-husband Ryan Sweeting, thanks to a prenuptial agreement the two signed in 2013 before they got married. Instead the 30-year old TV star will pay her 28-year old ex-husband a lump-sum payment of $165,000 but with no ongoing spousal support, as well as $55,000 in legal fees incurred by Sweeting during the divorce.
Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom
Cuoco and Sweeting lived together in a Tarzana mansion that was once owned by reality TV star Khloe Kardashian and NBA star Lamar Odom, who also decided to call their marriage quits this year after some major ups and downs. The two were married in 2009, and Kardashian first filed for divorce in 2013, but then later reconciled. But following a highly-publicized near-fatal overdose by Odom in a Nevada brothel in 2015, Kardashian finally filed for divorce for a second time in May 2016. Odom has apparently struggled with substance abuse leading to his overdose, but nevertheless has likely amassed a $50 million fortune from his NBA earnings, while sources indicate Kardashian is worth around $20 million.
Master P and Sonya Miller
Rapper Master P was once an aspiring NBA prospect himself, but unlike Odom he did not make it to the big leagues, nor does he appear to have maintained the fortune he did make in the music business, at least according to his arguments in court. Master P and his wife of 24 years, Sonya Miller, actually divorced in 2013 but they continue to argue over matters in family court in 2016. A family court judge ordered Master P to sign over an $825,000 check he received for TV work to his ex-wife to pay for her legal fees and back alimony that he owed her. As part of the divorce he is reportedly ordered to pay $30,000 in combined alimony and child support. Sources suggest Master P is worth $200 million while he claims to have less than $1,000.
